Devi Purana

Bengal, India; 6th century

One of the Puranas of the Shakta school, written at some time during the sixth century CE in Bengal. It is dedicated to Devi, a Sanskrit term meaning Goddess as such, rather than a specific one, yet often used as a synonym for Shakti and/or as a title for other goddesses.

Like the slightly earlier Devi Mahatmya, the Devi Purana makes obvious references to a pre-vedic religion of the goddess in India and declares the worship of her open to members of all castes. The text is only available in Bengali with Hindi commentaries.
