Sarasvati

India
  1. An important river of India's early history. Because it dried up more than 3.000 years ago, it was long held to be a "legendary underground river" held sacred since ancient times. Recently, however, satellite photography has shown that the river has actually existed, a fact that is now part of the arisen controversy concerning the so-called Aryan Invasion Theory.

  2. On a level of Tantric physiology, the "river" Sarasvati is also a symbol for the sushumna nadi, a major channel within the subtle body.

  3. The Indian goddess of creative energy and as such associated with music, dance and many other art forms. Sarasvati is often called the "Patroness of the Sixty-four Arts", among which the art of love is considered the first and foremost in importance. She is also the deity ruling scholarship, and knowledge; as well as intuitive wisdom. Fitting here is an aspect of her known as Sarada: Sarasvati as the goddess of speech (according to the Saradatilaka Tantra) The above, which reflects her most well known and popular image, does actually not show all of this goddess. As Vagbhairavi, she has a dark aspect associated with death; and as a member of the G'nas, with fertility and the earth.
