Prajna

Skt., prajna
Tib., shes-rab
profound cognition, wisdom

A very important term to grasp when navigation the endless continuum of the Indo-Tibetan Tantric mind and literature.

  1. Apart from its foremost meaning of "profound cognition", which equates with "wisdom", the term prajna and its Tibetan equivalent are sometimes translated as "consciousness", "knowledge" or "intelligence"; all qualities inherent in "profound cognition".
  2. Prajna, when defined as wisdom, refers to a wisdom that is inherent in immediate experience; a form of wisdom we often call intuition; at least when it is proven right.
  3. As the qualities conceptualized in prajna are associated with woman, they have been "personified" into a goddess: Prajnaparamita, meaning "Perfection of Wisdom". She is seen as a youthful, smiling goddess also known as the "Mother of All Buddhas", "Great Mother" (Tib., Yum chenmo), and "Mother of Wisdom".
Prajnaparamita is also the title of an important Buddhist scripture (Tib., shes-rab-kyi-pha-rol-tu-phyin-pa).
  4. Sometimes, especially in Buddhist texts, the term is also used to indicate female practitioners of initiatory or other forms of ritual sexuality.
