Lakshmi
Skt., laksmiThe goddess Lakshmi and/or Mahalakshmi ("Great Lakshmi") has been looked upon rather differently throughout time and throughout the various sects and schools in what is called Hinduism.
- in the Rig Veda, she is the goddess of fortune
- in the (much later) Atharva Veda, she is said to bring both fortune and misfortune
- centuries later, in mainstream Indian religion, she is once more the widely worshipped goddess of fortune, happiness and surplus
- her name occurs among the Navadurgas, making her a manifestation of Durga
- as Mahalakshmi, she manifests as a virgin girl of age 13 in the Kumari Puja
- Lakshmi is regarded as consort of the god Vishnu and his various incarnations: when he is Parashu-Rama, she is Dharani; when he is Krishna, she is Rukmini; when he is Rama, she is Sita.
