Skt., kamala: She Who Enjoys and is Enjoyed
Although one of the ten mahavidyas, Kamala also appears as simply another one of the one-hundred names of Kali, making it appear she is more or less a mere aspect of that goddess.
The term kama embraces our concepts of desire, love and eros, which makes Kamala the female personification of loving desire.
Philip Rawson describes her most beautifully as
pure consciousness of self, bathed by the water of fulfillment
... her whole body golden. She is enjoyer and enjoyed, the state
of reconstituted unity.
[Rawson. The Art of Tantra. p.133]
The term also means lotus; and Kamala, the "beloved lover", is therefore sometimes identified with Lakshmi, another lotus-lady.
