The Development of Vajrayana
1250 - 1800: Virtually Virtuous Politics
- monastic, scholarly and virtue oriented Tsongkapa reforms the
Kadampa order into the Gelugpa (1409)
- establishment of Gelugpa rule
- feuds between various schools (aligned to families and clans)
- slow but general decline of the dharma (Buddhist Doctrine), as petty
political power play becomes more important than the intrinsic value of Bodhisattva vows
- the older, shamanic tradition lies low but survives; for example through male and female adepts and
terton such as
Kunga Bum (14th century),
Longchenpa (14th),
Jigme Lingpa (18th)
and Mingyur Paldrön.
