Skt., dhumavati; Smoky One
In this aspect, the Shakti is often portrayed as a hideous hag with cruel eyes, sagging breasts and a toothless mouth; riding in a chariot drawn by crows. She represents the world's final destruction by fire (Skt., mahapralaya); hence her name.
Dhumavati is also the deity of unsatisfied desires, a fact that is mirrored in her alternative names Daridra ("poverty") and Vidhava (the "widow").
She is the goddess present in the mind of people who've lost touch with their roots, suffer from loss of memory and/or have no more hope in life. She's also often identified with the two deities Alaksmi, ("misfortune") and Nirrti ("misery").
In a less sinister aspect, Dhumavati is seen as the gray clouds obscuring the sun. Her symbolic animal is the crow.
