Daring for its Time
Utterly rejected by the "scientific establishment" of the time, this book was among the first to attempt re-writing hitherto male dominated and male-centered history; focussing on the lives of women rather than on the lives of warriors and statesmen and powerful merchants.
In this study, the author sketches an absolutley unflattering image of the two cultures that have shaped much of European (and thus North-American) concepts and laws: Greece and Rome during the period between 500 BCE and 500 CE.
Although later works had more information to build their arguments upon, and thus be both more precise and credible, this book certainly deserves more credit and recognition than it has ever gotten.
