Greece, Egypt, Sumer - India, China, Japan
Divided into two sections, East and West, the author has chosen five deities from each region to serve as examples of the divine in its most ancient, female form - i.e. before the world-wide patriarchal revolution.
For the East, the deities selected are three Indian ones (Durga, Lakshmi, Sita), the Japanese Amaterasu and the originally Chinese Kuan-yin; a goddess who later became known in Japan and Tibet as well.
Figuring as representatives of the West, a very relative category, are the Christian Mary, Aphrodite of Cyprus and the Greek Athena, the Egyptian Isis and the Sumerian Inanna - in short, some of the most important goddesses that have been around for the last 5000 years.
Anyone interested in one or more of these deities is well advised to read these essays.
