A veritable Who is Who of Indian Goddesses
In 211 pages, plus extensive notes and bibliography, the author succeeded here in sketching and discussing the sheer endless variety of manifestations the goddess (Skt., devi) has taken on the Indian sub-continent.
Kinsley, especially interested in both India and the Divine Female, presents the interested reader with a beautiful overview of famous and lesser known deities; ranging from the goddesses mentioned in early Vedic literature to the hardly ever discussed pre-Vedic Matrikas ("Little Mothers") and other local and village goddesses.
Apart form these, there are chapters concerning Chinnamasta, Durga, Kali, and Parvati, as well as an introduction to the 10 Mahavidyas; the latter of which were to be fully researched by the author in the years following this publication - resulting in his Tantric Visions of the Divine Feminine
